The Imiriaran Cycle
Yule is the winter festival that heralds the end of the Imiriaran year. It’s a time of feasting and presents, when friends and family gather to celebrate the death of one year and the rebirth of the next. It’s also a time to gather together against the harsh realities of winter. The Firstborn has made the world a harsh and terrible place. At yule, families gather to weather the worst of his wrath in an attempt to survive until spring.
Yule typically culminates in a great hunt, where even the lords and nobility allow their woods to be prowled by peasants. This is also a time of largess to the poor and grants from the local lord to the people. The lord traditionally pardons at least one poacher at the beginning of the hunt, and only a few use this as an excuse to pick out the troublemakers among their villages. More commonly they pardon by the crime, never identifying or trying to identify the culprit. More gracious lords pardon all uncaught poachers from the previous year.
